Argentina Considers Equipping F-16 Jets with Laser-Guided Rocket System to Combat Drones

Beyond its tactical advantages, APKWS is technologically notable for transforming a standard unguided Hydra rocket into a laser-guided precision missile, blending cost savings with enhanced battlefield performance.

APKWS upgrades traditional rockets by adding a laser guidance module to the standard 2.75-inch Hydra unguided rocket, drastically improving targeting precision. According to BAE Systems, the system is effective within distances of 2 to 14 kilometers, empowering F-16s to engage elusive drones and similar threats with far greater exactness than unguided munitions.

One standout feature of APKWS is its affordability, especially when compared to costly missile systems like the air-to-air AIM-120 AMRAAM. For Argentina, where defense budgets are limited, APKWS offers an effective upgrade without the expense of more advanced missile technology programs.

Upgrading Argentina’s Aerial Combat Edge

Equipping Argentina’s F-16s with APKWS would significantly bolster their drone engagement capabilities. While these jets already carry diverse air-to-air and air-to-ground armaments, APKWS specializes in tackling smaller, rapid UAVs that standard weapons struggle to neutralize.
