US Space Force Launches Unprecedented Orbital Combat Drill

The US Space Force has initiated a groundbreaking training operation aimed at enhancing its readiness for warfare beyond Earth. Known as Resolute Space 2025, this event marks the largest training exercise ever conducted by the service, designed to evaluate and demonstrate the force’s capability in space conflict. Kicking off on July 8, 2025, the exercise is spread across sites including Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii and several other locations within the Indo-Pacific area.

Engaging more than 700 Space Force Guardians, the operation involves cooperation with allied nations and other branches of the U.S. military. It simulates intense space warfare scenarios to ensure the US remains prepared for emerging threats. Amid increasing geopolitical tensions, especially in the Indo-Pacific, this drill underscores a sharpened focus on countering advanced military challenges from rivals such as China in extraterrestrial domains.

Comprehensive Training in Resolute Space 2025

The exercise blends tangible and virtual combat exercises targeting critical facets of space warfare, including electromagnetic operations, space situational awareness, orbital confrontations, and navigational warfare. Mastery of these domains is essential for effective modern space combat, where technology-driven tactics dominate.

Electromagnetic warfare involves leveraging the electromagnetic spectrum—ranging from radios and microwaves to laser systems—to impair or neutralize enemy spacecraft functions. Techniques include jamming communication channels and dazzling optical systems. Furthermore, space domain awareness facilitates the tracking and monitoring of orbital objects, delivering vital intelligence regarding potential hazards.

Among these, orbital warfare is less clearly defined but involves direct spacecraft engagements using maneuvers and weapons designed to disable or destroy adversary satellites. Likewise, navigational warfare targets positioning signals like GPS to mislead or disrupt opponent capabilities. These emerging skill sets are crucial for asserting space dominance.

Highlighting the gravity of Resolute Space 2025, General Chance Saltzman, Chief of Space Operations, stated, “The exercise will send a clear message that Space Force is prepared to fight and win in space shoulder to shoulder with our joint and allied partners.” He emphasized the Space Force’s dedication to maintaining global stability through strength and readiness.

Distinctives of Resolute Space 2025

This initiative goes beyond traditional space asset training by integrating live operations with advanced simulations, forming a holistic training environment for orbital conflict preparedness. The merger of actual and simulated training ensures realistic, adaptive responses to various combat situations.

Unlike earlier drills like Space Flag 22-3 that primarily used simulated space combat, Resolute Space 2025 employs a multi-domain warfare focus, enhancing the complexity and scope of Guardian training.

Department of the Air Force Secretary Troy Meink remarked that this exercise is the first of such scale since the Cold War era, signaling the growing importance of the US role in space defense as rival nations such as China advance their anti-space capabilities.
