The U.S. Space Force has initiated a groundbreaking program to build a laser-based communication network, partnering with four key aerospace and defense firms to transform space-based military communications.
This effort, named the Enterprise Space Terminal program, marks a vital progression toward establishing a secure and efficient communication framework for national defense purposes.
Laser Communication Terminal Contracts Awarded
The Space Systems Command (SSC) has entered agreements with Blue Origin, CACI International, General Atomics, and Viasat to develop prototype laser communication terminals. This initial phase of the $100 million Enterprise Space Terminal program focuses on creating optical devices capable of transmitting data via laser technology.

These laser communication terminals act as advanced modems, leveraging laser beams to send and receive data across extensive distances at the speed of light. This innovation is expected to vastly improve the reliability and speed of space-based military communications.
John Kirkemo, senior materiel leader at SSC’s Advanced Communications Acquisition Delta, highlighted the impact of this program: “Enterprise Space Terminal prototypes represent a significant advancement for future space mesh networks. They will establish a resilient system offering multiple communication pathways for vital national security information.” These terminals are foundational to building a versatile, secure communication network for military applications.
Goals of the Enterprise Space Terminal Initiative
The Enterprise Space Terminal program aims to create an interoperable space mesh network covering a range of orbits, from low Earth orbit to beyond geosynchronous orbit. The network is designed to ensure seamless communication across various military satellites, regardless of their deployment or manufacturer. The initiative is managed by SSC’s Space Domain Awareness and the Combat Power Program Executive Office, both focused on enhancing military space communication capabilities.
By developing a unified communication protocol for all satellites, this project intends to facilitate effortless data-sharing and coordination. Kirkemo emphasized the importance of this interoperability: “These terminals will establish a common language enabling all satellites to communicate with one another.” This compatibility is crucial for a cohesive and effective space-based communication system supporting diverse defense operations.
Selection and Development Criteria
Four companies were chosen through a competitive process led by the Space Enterprise Consortium (SpEC), a Department of Defense initiative encouraging involvement from non-traditional defense contractors, including innovative startups and commercial businesses.
The prototypes will be judged on their size, weight, power efficiency, and affordability, ensuring they meet stringent military standards for deployment. This thorough evaluation will help select the most practical and scalable solutions for operational use.
The Space Force’s strategy to include diverse contractors underscores its dedication to fostering innovation and advanced technology development. The program’s emphasis on minimizing size, weight, and power consumption highlights the necessity for compact and efficient systems suitable for deployment in space.
Advancing Military Communication Through Laser Technology
This endeavor marks a pivotal advance in upgrading and securing military communication infrastructures in orbit. The deployment of laser communication terminals promises more rapid, reliable, and robust links vital for defense and national security missions.
Utilizing lasers to transmit data at light speed could transform military operations by enabling faster and more resilient communication capabilities.
The Space Force’s continued focus on technological innovation underscores the essential role of cutting-edge solutions to maintain national security and operational readiness amid escalating challenges in space.
Investing in these sophisticated communication technologies not only boosts current defense capabilities but also establishes a foundation for future advancements necessary to sustain America’s technological edge in space. Collaboration with leading industry players ensures the U.S. remains a leader in space technology innovation, prepared to address emerging challenges.
