A striking 10-foot oarfish, often referred to as the “Harbinger of Doom,” has recently been found on a beach in Southern California, stirring intrigue and concern among residents and social media users. This event marks only the second such sighting this year of this elusive deep-sea dweller, which is famously linked to natural disaster folklore.
Understanding the Oarfish and Its ‘Doomsday’ Reputation
Oarfish are rare inhabitants of the mesopelagic zone, living at depths between 660 and 3,300 feet (around 1 km) where sunlight barely penetrates. Renowned for their sleek, ribbon-like bodies that can extend up to 36 feet, they hold the record as the world’s longest known bony fish. Their lustrous silver scales and vibrant red dorsal fins give them an almost mythical look.
The ominous nickname “doomsday fish” originates from folklore associating their appearance with earthquakes and tsunamis, a belief reinforced after the 2011 Japan earthquake, when numerous oarfish washed ashore before the event.
Though scientific evidence linking oarfish to seismic phenomena is lacking, some experts propose that their deep-sea environment might make them sensitive to tectonic disturbances.
Recent Oarfish Sighting in California
This newly found oarfish, about 10 feet (3.05 meters) long, was spotted by a PhD researcher affiliated with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at Grandview Beach in Encinitas. Since 1901, only about 20 such incidents have been recorded in California, highlighting the rarity of such encounters. Photos of the unusual marine creature quickly spread across social media, captivating onlookers with its extraordinary size and appearance.

What We Know About Oarfish Biology

Despite their impressive length, oarfish remain notoriously mysterious creatures with many aspects of their behavior and lifecycle still unclear.
