Hammerhead Shark Plummets Into South Carolina Disc Golf Game from Above

During an ordinary disc golf session on May 18, 2025, at Splinter City Disc Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, players were stunned when a hammerhead shark unexpectedly dropped from the sky. The surreal event caught everyone off guard, resembling a scene from a surreal movie.

Jonathan Marlowe was at the 11th hole with friends when he noticed a bald eagle soaring overhead, clutching an unidentified object in its talons. At first, Marlowe assumed the bird was carrying a typical fish—a common prey for coastal raptors like this bird of prey. However, his amazement grew when the eagle suddenly dropped its load, which landed heavily nearby.

The falling item wasn’t a fish but a hammerhead shark, about one meter in length, recognizable by its unique head shape. The sight left Marlowe and his companions in shock, struggling to process what they had witnessed.

"We kept asking each other, ‘Did that actually happen?’" Marlowe shared in a conversation with Garden & Gun. The entire group found the moment baffling and hard to believe.

A Rare Sequence of Events

The New York Post reports that the shark’s descent began with an encounter between the bald eagle and two crows. The crows seem to have harassed the eagle—engaging in mobbing, a behavior where smaller birds attack larger predators to protect their territory. This disturbance likely caused the eagle to drop its catch, resulting in the shark’s sudden fall and bewildering the disc golf participants.

The shark was probably seized from the ocean roughly 800 meters away, adding to the scene’s strangeness. Although hammerhead sharks are found regularly along the Atlantic coast near South Carolina and Georgia, encountering one falling from the sky during a disc golf match is extraordinarily rare. Species such as the great hammerhead and the scalloped hammerhead are native to these waters, often lurking near the southeastern U.S. coastline.

This coastal area is renowned for its diverse marine ecosystem, with many shark species regularly observed. However, the strange spectacle of a shark descending from the sky has made this particular incident unforgettable for the players, who never expected such an interruption during their game.

Community Response and What Came Next

Following the incident, Marlowe and his fellow players remained amazed by the unlikely event. “It was like a scene from a film,” he remarked. The shark was left where it landed, with the hope that the eagle might come back to reclaim its unusual catch.

Though unusual and hard to believe, the story quickly spread beyond the local disc golf scene. Photos capturing the extraordinary moment went viral, sparking fascination and conversation across broader communities.
