Meet Enigmacursor: The Lightning-Fast Jurassic Dinosaur No Bigger Than a Dog

A recently identified dinosaur, Enigmacursor mollyborthwickae, has captured the fascination of paleontologists worldwide. Comparable in size to a Labrador retriever, this speedy herbivore from the Jurassic period broadens our knowledge of prehistoric ecosystems. Unearthed during quarry excavations in 2021 and 2022, the dinosaur’s almost complete skeleton is now exhibited at the Natural History Museum (NHM) in London.

Unearthing a Brand New Dinosaur Species

Initially mistaken for the now obsolete genus Nanosaurus, Enigmacursor marks a significant advance in dinosaur research. NHM paleontologist Susannah Maidment remarks that this discovery challenges previous assumptions about ancient life. The name Enigmacursor, meaning “mysterious runner,” reflects both its rapid movement and the enigmatic nature of its evolutionary background.

Dating back approximately 150 million years, this small dinosaur shared its habitat with much larger herbivores like Stegosaurus. Its favorable coexistence reveals the rich biodiversity of the Jurassic era. The fossil, believed to belong to a juvenile specimen, exhibits unique traits that set it apart from its contemporaries.

Extended Tail and Agile Limbs

The remarkably preserved skeleton offers intriguing clues about the creature’s anatomy. Notably, Enigmacursor possessed a tail longer than its body, likely instrumental for balance and potentially for communication or defense, though its precise role is still under investigation.

Its disproportionately large feet relative to its body size indicate exceptional running ability. Limb and foot structures imply high agility, enabling the dinosaur to swiftly evade predators or efficiently forage. Nonetheless, Maidment suggests its small brain size might mean it wasn’t particularly intelligent, creating a portrait of a quick yet cognitively simple animal adapted to a competitive Jurassic world.

The arrival of Enigmacursor enriches our understanding of dinosaur diversity and Jurassic ecosystems. Unlike the more famous massive dinosaurs, small species like this one are now recognized for their crucial ecological niches.
