“The surfaces of the cathedral were cleaned, and all the dust that had accumulated over centuries is gone. The result is a much more vibrant and clearer sound.”

A Sharper and More Resonant Soundscape
Beyond restoring the original acoustics, the renovation aimed to refine them. Decades of accumulated dust and residues, which previously muffled sounds, have been thoroughly removed, resulting in more vibrant and transparent reverberations. Visitors and attendees alike can now enjoy an enriched auditory ambiance within the cathedral.
Katz also points out that the restoration has enabled customizable acoustic settings adapted to the nature of each event. This flexibility allows the sound environment to be adjusted for different types of performances or ceremonies.
“Now we have the opportunity to adjust the acoustics depending on the event. This could offer a whole new experience for visitors and those attending concerts or services.”
Tackling Acoustic Complexities
The cathedral’s grand scale presents unique challenges for managing sound. A concert demands different acoustic conditions than a religious ceremony. To meet these demands, contemporary acoustic technologies, including adjustable panels and advanced sound systems, have been integrated into the design to enable fine-tuning of the soundscape for every occasion.

Expanding on the exploration of Notre-Dame’s sonic heritage, Brian Katz has developed an animated documentary and an interactive audio tour. These initiatives are designed to deepen visitors’ appreciation of the cathedral’s acoustic evolution before and after the fire.
- Vaulted Harmonies: Debuted on January 24, 2024 during UNESCO’s Week of Sound, this animated film honors the cathedral’s acoustics by reproducing music from various historical eras as it would have sounded within Notre-Dame.
- Notre-Dame Whispers: Katz and his team also created an audio guide for iOS and Android devices, offering an immersive sound journey around the cathedral’s exterior that recounts its historical auditory landscape.
