Wall Collapse at Historic Portuguese Church Reveals a Dozen Ancient Skeletons

During the restoration of the Igreja Matriz de Portimão, a historic 15th-century church in Portugal, the partial failure of a wall exposed an astonishing discovery—more than a dozen human skeletons hidden within the masonry. Situated atop Portimão's highest elevation near the renowned Praia da Rocha coast, this former architectural marvel has weathered centuries, with the structural damage now shedding light on its buried past.

Discovery of an Extensive Burial Site in Portimão

Reported by Popular Mechanics, the unexpected find occurred amid repair efforts when workers stumbled upon skeletal remains intermingled with rubble, triggering an archaeological investigation.

Representatives from the Portimão City Council noted, “While replacing the wall, bones were uncovered, prompting archaeologists to be called in to examine the site.”

The bones were discovered inside walls adjacent to a courtyard, leading specialists to hypothesize the existence of a larger cemetery underneath the location. The council source explained, “Finding human remains near churches during construction is common, as these areas traditionally served as burial grounds.”

Remains Dating From Multiple Time Periods

Preliminary examinations have determined that the skeletons date back from the 16th to the 19th century, indicating the site’s use as a burial ground spanned multiple generations. Rita Dias, an archaeologist and the lead of the excavation team from ERA Arqueologia, said, “Due to overlapping layers in the stratigraphy, it appears the burial site was utilized repeatedly over centuries.”

Researchers are performing detailed analyses to identify the individuals’ ages, biological sexes, and health conditions, although precise dating remains elusive. Vera Teixeira de Freitas, an archaeologist with the Portimão Museum, told Sul Informação, “Up to now, no findings have enabled us to establish exact dates for these graves.”

Evolution of Burial Customs in Portimão

The discovery reflects historical traditions when burials commonly occurred in churchyards. According to Dias, interments near churches likely ceased by the 1860s due to growing concerns over public health. The city council representative added that “archaeological teams remain active in their efforts to better understand these findings.”

Historical archives confirm that a new cemetery was established outside the town limits in 1863. As the team proceeds with wall reconstruction and further study of the remains, questions linger about what additional burial secrets may still lie concealed within this ancient church’s walls.
