Young Girl Finds a Message in a Bottle on Florida Shore and Makes the Call

Back in 2018, a message in a bottle was set afloat from Kaena Point, Oahu, by siblings Payton and Elias Hollenbeck. Nearly seven years later, and almost 5,000 miles away, this bottle’s extraordinary voyage ended when it washed ashore on a Florida beach.

Florida Beachgoers Stumble Upon Bottle During Vacation

While visiting Bradenton Beach, Florida, a family from Michigan made a surprising discovery. Paris Hoisington’s daughter, Josie, noticed the bottle rolling in with the tide just in time.

“As the waves crashed and pulled back, the bottle rolled to the shore. I grabbed it quickly and showed it to my mom,” Josie shared. “At first, I thought it was trash, but then I saw it was a note inside a bottle,” she recounted to 10 Tampa Bay.

The bottle contained a handwritten letter that read: “Hello, people who found this. You will be happy that you found this. Why? Because you will know me with this number.” Alongside the note were two origami cranes, reflecting a personal interest of the senders. The bottle also included a contact number and the date it was released.

A Forgotten Message Sparks Unexpected Conversation

Payton Hollenbeck, now 21, was caught off guard when she received a text out of the blue. “I got a screenshot from an unknown number and wondered what it was about. Then I saw it was my note,” she explained. “The origami cranes were a clear sign since my brother and I loved folding them.”

The text came from the family who uncovered the bottle. “It was amazing to learn our message journeyed all the way to Florida and that they reached out to us. We never imagined this would happen,” Payton reflected, recalling the excitement upon reconnecting with a long-lost message.

This moment brought back memories of the spontaneous day when they released the bottle into the Pacific Ocean.

From Inspiration to Reflection on Ocean Conservation

The decision to send the message was intentional. Payton explained that she once found a message in a bottle herself while walking on her favorite beach. “It didn’t have a phone number, but it sparked our curiosity,” she said. “My brother and I thought it would be fun to create our own.”

What started as a playful experiment has evolved into a compelling story of connection spanning thousands of miles and multiple continents. Despite the unexpected attention, Payton shared that her view of the ocean has shifted over time.

She now advocates for marine preservation and warns others against replicating the act. “We don’t recommend doing this because it’s littering and against the law! We were unaware of this as kids and just copied something we’d seen,” she emphasized.
