Previously, motorists traveling San Juan’s Avenida de Circunvalación experienced conventional highway lighting reliant on the standard electrical grid. This vital city bypass connected major points but showed no signs of an upcoming revolutionary change in infrastructure.
That transformation started when crews began installation at various sections of the ring road. Work zones appeared along multiple stretches, erecting tall metallic poles at specific intervals. Though the highway’s structure remained untouched, the new additions introduced a lighting technology unlike the traditional electrical setups.

The initiative kicked off in 2024 when local authorities announced a strategic plan focusing on renewable energy advancements. Managed by Energía Provincial Sociedad del Estado, separate contracts were awarded for supplying and installing the systems. By mid-2025, contracts were finalized and deployment commenced along the entire highway loop.
A Highway Operating Independently from the Power Grid
The most striking change emerged as the installation reached completion. San Juan unveiled Argentina’s inaugural highway illuminated exclusively by solar power, turning Avenida de Circunvalación into a self-sustaining lighting corridor. Rather than relying on external electricity, the system produces and stores its own energy on location.
Central to the design are 36 standalone solar units, each rated at 5 kilowatts. These are evenly positioned along the road, mounted on seven-meter-high poles optimized for maximum sunlight exposure. Functioning as independent power generators, they form a decentralized network for the highway’s illumination.

Each unit contains solar panels accompanied by battery storage systems, allowing energy harnessed during daylight hours to illuminate the road after dusk. Powered by LED lights, the system provides continuous nighttime visibility without grid dependence. Its modular nature ensures ongoing operation even if individual components face malfunctions.
The Scale and Specifications
Breaking down the components reveals the project’s magnitude. Each of the 36 units is outfitted with 10 solar panels, totaling 360 panels installed along the highway. These not only provide lighting but also supply power for road monitoring and signaling equipment.
The units are split equally into four segments of the ring road, with nine generators in each sector. This distribution guarantees uniform illumination throughout the entire circuit rather than concentrating energy in select areas. These sectors cover crucial interchanges, entry points, and regions with high traffic flow.
The total investment for the project was about 1.67 billion Argentine pesos, financed by the provincial government. Authorities predict annual savings near $30,000 USD due to lowered energy expenses from the shift away from conventional power sources.
Reasons Behind Selecting This Location
The geography of San Juan was a decisive factor in choosing Avenida de Circunvalación for this initiative. The province benefits from ample solar irradiance year-round, making it ideal for photovoltaic technologies. Additionally, continuous traffic volumes created steady demand for reliable evening lighting.
This solar system also removes the need for extensive centralized wiring, which traditional highway lighting requires for electrical connectivity and maintenance. Instead, the decentralized setup simplifies installation and reduces ongoing costs.
Officials framed this project as a pillar of a wider renewable energy plan. Incorporating solar power directly into existing transportation infrastructure allows energy generation without modifying the road’s core design.
Operational Highlights of the System
More than 80 skilled personnel including engineers, electricians, and metalworkers from San Juan contributed during the construction phase. The project merged civil engineering with energy tech installation while maintaining active road operations.
Now, Avenida de Circunvalación is powered by 36 solar generators along the RN A014. Each consists of panels, batteries, and LED lighting units, delivering a fully grid-independent solar illumination system.
