Best Viewing Times and Locations for the Bootid Meteor Shower
The Bootid meteor shower will be visible from June 22 through July 2, 2025, reaching maximum activity near June 27. Meteors can be seen throughout the night, but the prime viewing period begins after sunset. The source point of the meteors, called the radiant, lies within the constellation Bootes. This radiant will climb high in the sky before nightfall and reach its peak altitude well after dark, offering excellent conditions for meteor spotting.
Heading into this year's peak, the skies will be especially clear due to the new moon phase, providing a dark backdrop that highlights even faint meteors. To maximize your chances, look approximately 40 degrees away from the radiant, ideally straight overhead, where the sky is darkest.
To estimate this distance, use your clenched fist at arm's length which roughly spans 10 degrees in the sky. By stacking four fists above the Bootes constellation, you can find the ideal section of the sky to observe the shower.
The Uncertain Nature of the Bootid Shower
Unlike dependable showers such as the Perseids or Geminids, which can shine with over 100 meteors per hour during their peak, the Bootids are infamous for their irregularity.
